There can be no question about the sighting of the month for May. Rul and his guests saw a black rhino bull on the afternoon of the 10th . This is the first sighting of black rhino in this area for many years. We have plenty of white rhino and see them regularly but the smaller black rhino is highly endangered and difficult to see as they prefer thicker vegetation.

Lions were seen regularly and sightings of the lion cubs were always a highlight. The cubs have now been introduced to the pride and the 3 mothers now stay and hunt together. This makes sightings of them very special as seeing 11 cubs in one pride is something to treasure. We found 2 females at a freshly killed zebra carcass on the morning of the 19th and then waited at the kill as the mothers went to fetch the cubs.

The rest of the morning was spend watching lion cubs feeding and playing around the zebra carcass. Imagine my surprise when we arrived at the kill the next morning to find a dead wildebeest calf, that must have stumbled into the lions during the night, lying right next to the zebra carcass. The 2 big male lions and 3 younger ones were also found feeding on a freshly killed warthog just after they must have killed it.

There are a lot more rhinos in the concession area and one or 2 new bulls seem to be marking out new territories as well. The black rhino has been seen a few times since Rul's first sighting and I even managed to take a few photos. Elephants are plenty, as well as buffalo, so we enjoyed a very productive game viewing month.

A big thank you to Terah Ott for sending Kyle Sheets and company through to Pondoro.

Congratulations to Erhard and Yolandi Benade for choosing Pondoro to celebrate their first wedding anniversary and to Diane Botha who celebrated her birthday with us.
