We now have 2 lionesses with cubs in our traversing area. The 1st sign that the Mother lion also has cubs was on the 18th of March when we found her at a freshly killed waterbuck and noticed that she was lactating. We then found her and 2 newborn cubs on the 25th close to Pride Rock.
By mid March I haven't been able to get decent photos of Noengu Mafazi and her 4 cubs yet, and I was really getting desperate. I got my chance, however, on the 18th when we came upon Noengu Mafazi during the afternoon drive and from her behaviour it was clear that she was returning to the cubs after a unsuccessful hunt. On route she spotted a huge waterbuck bull at Xibejuana Dam and started stalking.
She managed to get to within 20 metres of the waterbuck and because it was cornered with the lioness in the front and the water behind it, I thought that she was going to kill it. The waterbuck, however, saw her just as she began her charge and with incredible acceleration and nifty footwork it managed to escape. The lioness continued after this and very soon we saw 4 bundles of fur answering to her calls and I had my first decent sighting of the cubs.

On the 20th we also found her and the 4 cubs at the remains of the waterbuck that was killed by the Mother Lion a few days before.
Noengu Mafazi and the cubs were seen nearly every day from then on and provided everyone with fantastic photo opportunities.

The 2 big male lions, Big Boy and Mazinyo, were seen regularly and on the 15th and 16th they were seen feeding on a giraffe. They also killed a buffalo on the 29th and we saw them feeding on the remains for the next few days(see video of Mazinyo roaring on Pondoro blog).
A group of about 60 buffaloes were seen regularly, as well as leopard and rhino. The breeding herds of elephants seem to have left with elephant sightings limited to small groups of bulls only.
We also made some small renovations to our standard chalets and each one now has a bath and a shower. We tried to make something different by building outside baths and are confident that this will add value to our product.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jan and Bets Fokkens who visited Pondoro again during March and are like family now. This was their 5th visit and we are looking forward to the next one.
