The new year brought lovely warm summer weather with below average rainfall. We are also starting to see the first wildebeest calves of the season. They are able to stand within 5 minutes after birth and run after only 30 minutes. A true miracle of nature.

January has been one of our best game viewing months ever with good sightings of all the Big 5. Elephants are everywhere and the biggest herd seen numbered 100.

Several breeding herds of buffalo are around with the largest group of 200 that was seen at Dead end dam on the 24th.

Lion sightings as always have been good and guests saw lions hunting buffalo, impala and warthog. We also saw lions feeding on giraffe, warthog and wildebeest. Lions were seen while guests were on a walk. Guests also saw lions mating and experienced the trill and excitement of having 2 male lions fighting only 15 meters from the vehicle.

Sightings of the month:

We saw the mother lion stalking and catching a baby wildebeest on the 22nd near the Ngwenya dam. She then picked it up and took it to her waiting cubs. The still half alive wildebeest was given to the cubs whereupon they chased it and eventually killed it. A classic example of a lioness teaching her cubs how to hunt and kill.

on the 20th of January we saw Mazinyo mating with the mother lion at Nyala pan. The next morning Big Boy found the honeymoon couple and was understandably not very impressed. Teeth and claws sliced through fur and flesh and when the dust settled Big Boy emerged as victor and he departed with a very unhappy mother lion in tow. A dazed and confused looking Mazinyo was left babysitting her 3 cubs.

Guests also saw a rare sighting of a serval on the 10th of January.

All photographs were taken by Robbie Prehn during Jan 2008 while on game drive with guests.
