Pondoro took the big step in employing an assistant management couple at the lodge and we would like to take this opportunity of welcoming Shaun and Rozanne into our midst.

February has been quite an eventful month for the York pride. On the morning of the 17th we found one of the 21 year old male lion caught in a snare. The wire was wrapped around his stomach and had already started to eat into his flesh. A vet from the closest town was immediately contacted to come through to tranquilize the lion and remove the snare. I am happy to report that the lion has since made a full recovery.

On the 28th one of the 8 month old cubs was seen on the Pondoro property suffering from the effects of a snakebite, probably Black Mamba or Snouted Cobra. He was salivating a lot and moving with great difficulty. That evening his condition had deteriorated further and he was drifting in and out of consciousness. His mother and the other 2 cubs came back to guard him through the night. It was heartbreaking to watch her trying to pull him upright by grabbing him by the neck.

Very few people gave him any chance to survive. The next morning I rushed to the scene, but found only tracks. The cub was nowhere to be found and my hopes of him being alive increased. The next day we found the mother lion and all 3 cubs playing, as if nothing had ever happened, at Coert's dam!

Lions were seen feeding on wildebeest twice, impala and zebra. Guests also saw the lions hunting waterbuck, warthog and giraffe.

Game viewing of all the animals have been good, especially elephant and buffalo which were seen daily.

Sightings of the month:

Saw Big Boy catching a baby warthog.

All photographs were taken by Robbie Prehn during Feb 2008 while on game drive with guests.
