The young subadult lions of the York Pride are reaching the age where they will be chased away by the 2 dominant males. On the 8th four of the young males were seen fighting with the 2 dominant males close to the vehicle of a neighboring lodge.

The young males seemed not to suffer any visible or psychological scars as we saw them the next day chasing 2 honey badgers. That night they also killed a 2yr old buffalo and we promptly found them the next night hunting some big old dagga boys around Elephant Dam area.

The 2 rhino bulls that joined us during July are still in the area and they seem to be here for good. Another 2 rhino bulls also entered our traversing area and hopefully they also decide to stay.

The Big 5 was seen regularly during game drives and lion, elephant and rhino were also seen during bush walks.

Lions were seen feeding on a warthog and kudu. We also saw them hunting giraffe and buffalo. On the 2nd of August, while watching a group of jackal feeding on a warthog carcass that was killed by a leopard 2 days before, a lioness suddenly came from nowhere and killed a jackal right in front of the vehicle.

Lastly I want to leave you with a poem written to us by Joe and Leanne Caffey (from Limerick, Ireland) that stayed with us during August:

We came to Pondoro on our honeymoon
Little did we know we'd fall in love so soon,
With Robbie and Andrise on adventures wild
Dizzy with excitement I haven't known since
I was a child,
Back at the Lodge Liza warm and welcoming at
the helm
The Sounds, Sights, Everything, you're overwhelmed,
With Patricia and friends their smiles so bright
You want for nothing be it day or night

Peace and quiet and stars up above
there is no greater setting for love,
The food so exotic the flavours you cannot deny
This must be what you call a natural high,
You come to Pondoro Lodge to see "the big five"
When you're leaving you know what it is to be alive
The company, the wildlife, dreams you can see
There really is nowhere we'd rather Be!!

Pondoro would also like to thank Bente Melander who returned to us for the 3rd time (Main Camp) and Steve Hodges and family ( Self-catering ) for their 2nd visit. All photographs were taken by Robbie Prehn during August 2008 while on game drive with guests.
