We are now firmly embraced in the vicelike grip of winter, but fortunately the grass is still good and the animals thriving.
Highlights of the month:
1 Aug: York pride feeding on a buffalo on the Campfire section.
2 Aug: The 2 dominant male lions were found feeding on another buffalo bull close to the Olifants road.
3 Aug: Two subadult male lions feeding on a giraffe kill close to River Lodge.
6 Aug: It is definitely not a happy time for giraffe as 4 young male lions were found next to 2 dead giraffes, one big and one small.
12 Aug: The York pride was followed while they were hunting and we heard them catching a kudu about 150 metres away from the vehicle. Big Boy, the dominant male, raced to the kill and chased everyone off. He reluctantly allowed the cubs to feed. At one stage he had enough of them and tried to drag the kill away. The cubs refused to let go and he eventually gave up.

13 Aug: We followed up on alarm calls of impala during the afternoon drive and found Mazinyo, one of the dominant males, also coming to inspect what all the noise was about. He searched and sniffed around for a while until he suddenly picked up an impala carcass. A leopard must have made the kill and then ran off when he saw the male lion approaching.

26 Aug: Andries, my tracker, found fresh leopard tracks at Elephanten tranken during the afternoon drive and followed them until he heard the growling of mating leopards closely. We then drove into the bush in that general direction and found a big male and female leopard mating.
