We are now being blessed with an abundance of lion cubs (11 in total) after going through a period of nearly 2 years where no newborn cubs were seen on our traversing area. It took a while to sort out how many cubs were born to each female, but I can happily report now that Noengu Mafazi has 4 cubs, Mother Lion has 2 cubs and Kokwana has 5 cubs. Lion sightings throughout the month have been superb as one would expect with so many cubs around. On the 4th we found Noengu Mafazi and her cubs on a freshly killed waterbuck and on the 9th we found them again just after she had killed a warthog. Both sightings offered superb photo opportunities. ( See video on Pondoro blog ) In total we had 11 sightings of the lion cubs during the month. Lions were also found feeding on buffalo, waterbuck, warthog and impala. The elephants are also back in numbers and several breeding herds were seen during the month. There also seems to be more rhinos around than ever before and there must be at least 8-10 rhinos walking around our traversing area. Sightings of the month: All the lion cub sightings. Shaun and his guests heard lions fighting at a kill while watching a herd of elephants on the 25th at Xintowana road. They raced over to where they heard the noise coming from and found the 2 big males, Mother Lion and 3 subadults feeding on an impala kill. The 4 young male lions were seen hunting buffalo on the 29th at Craig's road and Shaun and his guests actually saw one male lion jumping onto the back of a huge buffalo bull. The hunt was however unsuccessful, but thrilling and exhilarating for all of us, who watched in expectation. The group of mongoose that stays around the camp attacked a huge 2 meter snouted cobra and killed it just before us leaving on the afternoon safari ( See video on Pondoro blog ) I would like to take this opportunity to thank Luca and Serena Zanzoni who visited Pondoro for their 2nd time and the Fechter family who visited for the 5th time during April.
